Kitchen Measuring Guide... Step 3.
Remember us saying that walls are not straight, or plumb, and corners are not square - well think of your kitchen as a big empty box (which is not square) into which you are going to place lot's of perfectly square items (your kitchen cabinets and appliances).
You need to know that the little square boxes are going to fit into the big "out of shape" one!
Take a look at the outline sketch of your kitchen, its likely to consist of lots of small measurements to take, for example ... the distance between the door and a window, then the distance between the window and the corner, etc, etc.
This is the easiest way to take measurements ... and the wrong way!
What we want (to start with) is the overall width of each wall (never assume that walls opposite each other are the same width) - and we want to know the width at the point the cabinets / appliances are going to sit.
You need to measure the overall width of each wall at two different heights (for the base cabinet run and the wall cabinet run) ... yeh we know, what a performance!
See example below:

Now we now these two critical measurements we can always refer back to them to check everthing fits.
Once we know the overall width (the critical width) of each wall we can start filling in the short wall measurements.
See example below:

Do not be surprised if these small individual measurement do not add up to the critical overall width ... as we said its because your wall are not straight, plumb, or square.
These smaller inividual measurements provide the "boundries" of your kitchen design, ie the run of cabinets up to the edge of a window, or the height of the cabinets under a window cill, etc, etc
See example width measurements below:

Summary...
- You have taken the critical overall width measurements
- These critical measurements will be used to check that the final design fits the space available
- The individual measurements provide the boundaries of the kitchen design
